TONY AUFFRET
Born and raised in the north east of England. Thanks to a full student grant, I was lucky enough to go to university at a time when most teenagers didn't. Since then, I have moved around the UK following my career and have been settled in South East Kent for the last 20 years or so.

My career has been science based, covering molecular biology, biochemistry, biopreservation, freeze drying and pharmaceutical development. I have published articles in the scientific and popular presses, as well as co-authoring a text book. Intelligent rather than creative writing.

Why change? In the 1990s I worked in a small biotech start-up on the Cambridge Science Park. One of us was an ex-spy, one of us was a visiting Russian scientist, and I imported a potential germ warfare agent from a country classified as an unfriendly power. Let me just say that some interesting things happened. Events and occurrences that I always felt had the makings of a good story, and, twenty five years later, 'The Death of a Smoker' was written.

Though if freeze drying is your thing, I can recommend a good text book.
